Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI)

About KFRI

The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), established in 1975, is one of the seven institutions under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) to undertake research in all aspects of forestry, wildlife biology, wood science and technology and socio-economics that are vital to the development of forestry sector in Kerala State.


  


Facilities

The main campus extends over an area of 28 ha, part of the picturesque Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary. The Institute has two sub-Centres- one at Nilambur in North Kerala and the other at Velupadam, Palapilly in Trichur District.
KFRI has laboratories, library; and other facilities attached to various Divisions. The laboratories are well equipped to undertake research of disciplinary and multi-disciplinary nature in tropical forestry The Subcentre at Nilambur has a unique Teak museum displaying artefacts and utility items of teak wood, scientific information on various aspects of teak cultivated, wood utilization and economics. In addition to display area, the museum has a library housing world literature on teak, a modern auditorium and nature trail with bioresources elements such as butterfly garden, medicinal plants, bamboo, indigenous trees, etc. and animal models.
KFRI has one of the best scientific libraries in Kerala with over 12,500 books, 6000 back volumes of journals, and 7000 reprints of scientific papers covering all disciplines related to forestry.

The Organization

KFRI is organised into structural units called Divisions. The Administration Division is headed by the Registrar. Each Research Division is headed by a Senior Scientist designated as Scientist-in-Charge. At present there are 53 scientists. Most of the scientists are with extensive research background in India and abroad. In addition, there are 19 technical and 87 administrative supporting staff.

There are 15 Research Divisions:
Agroforestry, Botany, Ecology, Economics, Entomology, Genetics, Extension, Plant Physiology, Non-Wood Forest Products, Plant Pathology, Statistics, Soil Science, Wood Science, Wildlife Biology.
