About RANWA
The Research and Action in Natural Wealth Administration (RANWA) is an NGO working in the field of
Biodiversity Conservation and Environmental Awareness. RANWA is registered as a Public Charitable Trust
at Pune. RANWA means wilderness in vernacular!
Its objectives include nature and environmental research, education and activism everywhere, primarily
through college students.

Programmes
RANWA is currently involved in the following programmes
- Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
RANWA in collaboration with ATREE is involved in the assessment of Indian Bio-Diversity hotspots. RANWA is
coordinating the North Western Ghats sector with focus on urban ecosystem.
- Urban Ecosystem Planning
RANWA has been involved in pioneering work in the area of urban ecosystem planning. RANWA was the first
in South Asia to create an urban directory of plants and animals containing information on the whereabouts
of about 300 trees, 400 birds, 100 butterflies, besides mushrooms, insects and mammals around Pune City
- Forest and Wildlife Monitoring
RANWA is actively engaged in the monitoring of trees, birds, butterflies, frogs etc. at Bhimashankar,
Mahabaleshawar, Phansad and Kayna along marked forest plots and transects with the support of the State
Forest Department.
- People’s Diversity Register
RANWA has pioneered documentation of folk knowledge and practices of conservation of bio-diversity. Such
Peoples Bio-Diversity Registers have now become popular throughout the country as a tool to disseminate
knowledge commercial products of Bio-diversity and to facilitate protection of Intellectual Property
Rights (IPRs).
The Organization
RANWA members include people from various walks of life. Members or invited experts such as
Prof. S. D. Mahajan, Prof. R. V. Gandhe, Prof. Sanjeev Nalawade etc. share their experience of nature
trails, interesting information regarding environmental issues through chats, slide-shows, games etc.
at 'Katta' i.e. fortnightly informal gatherings. These gatherings also help in planning & reviewing
activities.
